July 16th, The Day of Summer Nails

July 16th is the day of summer nails in Japan. It was implemented by one company offering nail services.

1. Company's goal

“Having designed nails lifts us up”, the company wanted more people to enjoy this simple happy feeling.

Summer is when a lot of people want to get nail designs for festivals, beaches, trips, etc. Unfortunately, however, some people hesitate to go to nail salons for different reasons.

This company offers home-visit mailing services for those people.

2. Why on July 16th??

Many of these anniversaries derive from playing on words and so does this. Its official name sounds like this in Japanese.

“Natsu wo irodoru nail no hi”

They picked some sounds from this sentence to fit into the sound of the date July 16th!

Each number corresponds to:

7 (na)
1 (i)
6 (ro)

So numbers replace some sounds and you can interpret like this: “Na(7)tsu wo i(1)ro(6)doru nail no hi”

In Japan, anyone can sign up for making new anniversary, by applying for the Japan anniversary association. Some people make anniversaries because they are so enthusiastic with a specific thing. Some companies even use it as an advertisement tool.
